Why am I listening to German pop? Why now?

"Pop in German is in". It appears this is the maxim of the German musical scene at the moment. So many tracks are now in German – more than ever before. What began with Hip-Hop in German a little more than two years ago has now spread to other genres. People are talking about a “new German wave” – the first German wave in the 1980s made artists and groups like Nena (“99 Luftballons”), Ideal, Extrabreit and Kraftwerk (“Wir fahr'n fahr'n fahr'n auf der Autobahn ") famous. Spanish Fork moviemakers Tom and Ali Durham received a $13,000 kick-start from online "angels."

At KickStarter.com, people can contribute as little as $5 to fund small-scale projects. Tom used the site to make a fundraising pitch for "95ers: ECHOES," the Durhams' locally made indie sci-fi film. It became the most successful KickStarter film project, making $10,000 in eight days.

The husband and wife team have worked for four years to complete their full-length sci-fi movie. They call it "ultra-indie" filmmaking and financed the endeavor with loans, credit cards, family help and finally KickStarter.com.

I have been listening to Juli's new album for the past 3 weeks as I traveled to and from work and I have to say that, while different, it is every bit as good as their previous work. I originally thought that the first single 'Elektrisches Gegühl' would be the highlight of the album; however, I was immediately captivated by two of the slower tracks on the album, 'Ich Bin In Love (Paris)' and 'Du Lügst So Schön'. This album is more experimental than the Juli's previous two albums and the craftsmanship of these masterful musicians shines through in every track.

You can currently buy Juli's second album 'Ein neuer Tag' and their live album 'Ein neuer Tag Live' which I consider to be one of the best live albums ever recorded, at iTunes.

The following is a rough translation from German:

This young band from Mannheim Germany plays beautiful pop songs that are deep, passionate and optimistic. The driving piano riffs, playful guitars, and crystal-clear voice of charismatic front-woman Lilli Born form the band's distinctive sound.

Martin Rott originally formed the band 'Blaues Wunder' around singer-songwriter and wife Lilli Born. The band won Vision Star 2006 and placed first at Newcomer Festival 2006 three months later in Austria. Their song "I Love Songs" climbed to No. 1 on the charts of the largest Internet radio station, RMN radio.

The band took a break in 2007 for maternity leave and a bit of introspection.

In 2008, the multi-talented Martin Rott moved from drums to piano changing the definitive character of the band. New songs were written and the name of the band was changed to "Anstatt Blumen" (Instead of Flowers). With their song "Turn Around", the band was awarded 'Newcomer of the month of May 2009' on BigFM.

Currently, they are recording their new album which will be released in the fall of 2010.

Mortal Coil

I just received my copy of Mortal Coil, the 5th book in the Skulduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy from Amazon UK. The series is quite popular in the UK and Australia, but has been largely ignored in the US. I believe that Harper Collins decision to market them sans the skeletal artwork is partially to blame. The original novel was awarded Irish Book of the Decade. The series is listed as 9+, but the violence may be a bit intense for some in that age range. Derek has done a great job creating an often humorous action adventure with a touch of the macabre. A clean, well-written series with enough twists and turns to keep this adult on the edge of his seat.

Ten Surprising Things

I have been tagged by my wife with the 'Top Ten Things I Did That Still Surprise The Heck Out Of Me' Meme (although, I am not sure that the Meme is being used correctly here). So, here I go.

1) I shared a bottle of whiskey (actually just a sip) one cold winter's night on the streets of Sendai, Japan with the professional wrestling team 'The Fabulous Freebirds'. As my friends and I approached, both sides acknowledged the other as being Americans, introductions followed, and then out came the bottle from beneath one of the wrestler's coats. One of my companions was a big wrestling fan and this made his night.

2) As my friends and I arrived at a Duran Duran concert in Sendai, Japan (same trip) our taxi was met in front of the concert hall by several Japanese men in suits who escorted us through the crowd and into the lobby. We stood there a few minutes before we realized that we had been mistaken for roadies. Much to our embarrassment, we had to walk back outside and stand in line along with the crowd that had just witnessed our arrival to buy our tickets. Our seats ended up on the side of the stage facing a stone pillar, so we could not see the band at all. Fortunately, the section did not fill up and we were able to move to a better spot.

3) I worked as a production assistant in New York City on the Michael J. Fox movie 'The Secret of My Success'. This consisted, among other things, of staying up all night on the streets of an area known as Hell's Kitchen and walking up to total strangers to ask them not to park within a 2 block radius of the outdoor set. I did get to watch them film one scene with Michael and Helen Slater that unfortunately never made it into the film. I also did not make it into the credits.

4) I survived 2 Hurricanes (including Hugo), 1 Typhoon (Thad) and a Tornado.

5) I tore the ticket stub of Brooke Shields the night that she went to see the movie 'Choose Me' at a small Art Cinema in New York City.

6) I was working as a projectionist and ran a private screening for Tony Scott of his movie 'Revenge' while he was in Charlotte, North Carolina directing 'Days of Thunder' with Tom Cruise.

7) I was thrilled to attend a class on bread baking with Peter Reinhart author of Brother Juniper's Bread Book, The Bread Baker's Apprentice, and many others.

8) I saw the original Tokens at a 50's revival show singing 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight'. They sounded as good as they did when the originally recorded the song. I also sang a version of the Gene Vincent song 'Be-Bop-A-Lula outside of the Coliseum as part of a radio-sponsored karaoke event.

9) I danced at both Studio 54 (the discotheque) and the Peppermint Lounge (where Chubby Checker did the twist) in New York. Of course, it was well after their heyday.

10) I ate whale meat one night in Japan. It gave my tongue a very dry almost furry feeling.

I found the most delightful album last night by a brother-sister duo from Herefordshire, UK. Here is a description of the album from Amazon:

New Zealand's Aly Cook is the 40th artist to reach her goal on Netherlands based Sellaband, raising $20,000 in 4 months and 6 days. Some 225 believers in Aly's music from around the world invested in her album project.

Blaues Wunder performs at Night of Music Arts

Blaues Wunder, recently named winner of the Best Band Video, performed at the Night of Music Arts in Europa Park Dome in Rust, Baden-Württemberg tonight.

The songs of Blaues Wunder are deep, passionate and optimistic. The driving piano riffs, playful guitars, and crystal-clear, exceptional voice of Lilli Born form the unmistakable sound of the band surrounding singer and songwriter Martin Rott. The band was formed in late 2005 by a group of ambitious, young musicians whose persuasive power brought them to Star2006 and earned them 1st place in the Newcomer-Festival 2006 in Austria, while their song "I Love Songs" hit No. 1 on the charts of RMN radio, an internet radio station in Saarland with the largest number of listeners. However, during a break in 2007 the band embarked upon a change in style and direction. 2008 brought new songs and the shift of multi-talented Martin from drums to piano giving the new band an unmistakable sound and a definitive long-term future. The band was named Newcomer of the Month May'09 at BigFM with their song "Umdrehn". They are currently working on the first album.

The band is seeking believers on Sellaband to help finance the mastering and promotion of their first album. You can become a believer for as little as $10.
